THE FALL INTO SIN
The window shows Eve over Adam in its vertical orientation of the two. It was this way too: Eve was taking over leadership she shouldn’t have and Adam was not leading his wife to do what was right. He was just there “with her” when he should have been saying, “Eve, we shouldn’t be listening to the snake.”
The fruit is in the shape of a heart. That is the symbol of love today and this shape and symbol were in play at the time of the first sin. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” The first sin was also a sin against love.
The fig leaves are ready in the lower right hand corner of the window. These would become Adam and Eve’s choice in clothing after their sin.
The Lion and the Lamb must deal now with the reaching and taking and eating of the two people. The Lamb will have to die. “Behold the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.” The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is also Jesus as John says in the Revelation (5:5), “See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed.”
Of course there is the snake with his forked tongue telling his lies, “You won’t die!” but the people did die.
Pay attention to the glass in the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.” It is special glass with beautiful color in it. It says in the account in Genesis, “…the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye.” (Genesis 3:6) The fruit itself is made from one piece of iridized red glass. The light passing through it and the light reflected off it is beautiful…and different.
The window completes the series of windows in our church which present God’s plan and work of salvation. This last window shows the need for all the presentations of the other windows.
